What Happens During an Animal Communication Reading?

If you’ve never had an animal communication reading, it’s completely reasonable to wonder what to expect.

Does my animal have to be present? Does the reading have to be in person? If you can’t actually see my animal, how do you communicate with them?

All wonderful questions that an animal communicator should be happy to answer.

Every practitioner works a little differently, but here’s a general look at the reading process and what you can generally expect before, during, and afterward.

Before the Reading

If an animal communicator offers a complimentary consultation, take advantage of it. It gives you an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the process, and get a sense of the practitioner’s personality, communication style, and experience.

Some animal communicators ask for photos or questions ahead of time, especially if the reading is done in meditation without the client present. Others may not need much preparation at all.

One question I hear often is whether the animal needs to be present during the reading.

The answer is no.

Animal communicators use telepathy to connect with animals, so your pet doesn’t need to be sitting next to you — or even in the same room. Of course, it’s always lovely when a sweet furry face decides to pop into the Zoom screen, but it certainly isn’t required.

A few things can help you prepare for your reading:

  • Have any questions or concerns you’d like to discuss in mind.

  • Be ready to share basic information about your animal, such as their name, species, and age.

  • Stay open to unexpected messages or insights that may come through.

  • Most importantly, relax. You don’t need to do anything special to make the communication happen.

The Pet Parent’s Role

You might be wondering, “If you’re talking to my pet, do I even need to be there?”

In the type of readings I offer, yes — and I love having the pet parent involved.

Rather than the reading simply being a conversation between the animal and the communicator, it becomes an interactive conversation between all three of us.

You are also your animal’s advocate. You know their history, their personality, and the things happening in their world. You may have questions about behavior, health concerns, changes within the family, relationships with other animals, or simply things you’ve always wondered about.

During the reading, you can ask questions, respond to what your animal shares, and sometimes clarify something so we can explore it a little more deeply.

And it’s equally important to remain open to whatever your animal might want to talk about.

Sometimes they have their own agenda. ☺️

You may even notice subtle shifts before the reading takes place. Animals are incredibly aware of our energy, and they may already sense that something is about to happen.

After the Reading

People often leave an animal communication reading with answers, validation, a better understanding of a behavior, or simply a deeper sense of connection with their animal.

But the conversation doesn’t necessarily end when the Zoom call does.

Over the following days or weeks, pay attention to your animal. You may notice subtle changes.

Even when an animal shares that they are happy and deeply appreciative of the life they have, there can still be a sense of relief in simply having had the opportunity to express themselves and be heard.

If something comes up afterward that concerns or confuses you, it’s perfectly appropriate to contact the animal communicator and ask about it. Some practitioners also offer follow-up readings or packages that allow additional time to explore something further.

Animal Talk

Connecting with your animal is one of the most beautiful ways to strengthen a bond that already exists.

And understanding goes both ways.

I don’t think of an animal communication reading as an opportunity to learn absolutely everything about your pet. I think of it as a two-way conversation.

Yes, you finally get the opportunity to hear some of their thoughts, opinions, feelings, and ideas.

But they also get to hear from you.

And although animals are already remarkably good at reading our energy, sometimes there is something powerful about giving them — and ourselves — the space for an intentional conversation.

If you’ve been curious about animal communication but weren’t quite sure what actually happens during a reading, I hope this gives you a clearer picture of the experience.
